Sam Procita is a graduate of Onondaga Central Schools. After graduation, Sam attended a local day habilitation program. Sam had dreams of becoming a farmer and working with tractors. Sam's goals of farming could not be achieved within the confines of a traditional group day habilitation program.
Sam and his parents approached Advocates to see if we could help. Advocates helped Sam and his Circle of Support develop a person-centered plan that reflected his interests in farming and tractors. Using Self-Determination/CSS, Sam's dreams became a reality.
Sam's team reached out to a local farmer, Greg, who became Sam's "farm coach". Using his Self-Determination services, Sam and his family were able to hire the local farmer to work as Sam's support staff. Greg helped Sam to learn key farming skills such as planting and harvesting corn, feeding and caring for the dairy cows.
Self-Determination services gave Sam the freedom to create his own schedule based on his goals and interests. Sam found a part-time job in a local tractor store. He pursues his interest in music at a local music store where he meets up with friends. Sam's Self-Determination plan has helped him to achieve his goals as a farmer and enriched his life.
When Greg got married, Sam was proud to serve as his best man. Greg and his wife named their first son "Sam".
